This is the complete list of publications as Mario Livio himself maintained it, transcribed entry by entry and grouped so it can be read and not only scrolled. The Mario Livio publications indexed here run to 325 entries dated 1975 to 2008: 226 refereed journal papers, 78 contributions to conference proceedings, 5 popular articles and presentations, and 16 edited volumes.

One caveat belongs at the top, because the two numbers get confused. 325 is the size of this list, not a career total — the source list carries nothing after 2008, and the author’s own count of his refereed journal papers has been quoted elsewhere as higher. Every figure on this page is derived from the 325 transcribed records and from nothing else.

Read as a whole, the Mario Livio publications fall into four research areas, and each has its own page: 73 entries on accretion disks, 90 on novae and white dwarfs, 47 on black holes and jets and 33 on supernovae and cosmology. Nothing is hidden behind them — every entry appears on this page too, so a facet is a second route through the same records and none of them is a subset of it.

The four sections below are the divisions of the original list. Together they make up the complete Mario Livio publications record as that list held it, and each is introduced with what distinguishes it from the others, beyond its count.

Refereed journal papers

The 226 refereed journal papers are the core of the record, and within the Mario Livio publications they are the entries that carry the argument instead of restating it. The Astrophysical Journal takes the largest share at 127 entries; Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society follows with 34 and Astronomy & Astrophysics with 28. 9 reached Nature.

Two features of the list are worth knowing before reading it. The first is that a title can appear twice: two papers here were published in a journal and again in a proceedings volume, and both versions are kept because both are citable. The second is that the co-author pattern is unusually stable — 25 entries with James Truran, 20 with James Pringle, 19 with Noam Soker — so reading the list by collaborator, not by year, gives a different and arguably more accurate picture of how the work was done.

Editing

16 edited volumes and conference proceedings, several from the Space Telescope Science Institute Symposium Series. Where does the list come from?

It is transcribed from an archived copy of the author’s own list of publications, entry by entry, keeping the original four sections. Seventeen lost fi and fl ligatures were repaired where the archived page rendered them as question marks.

Why do two titles appear twice?

Because both versions are real. The Nature of Recurrent Novae (1987) appeared in two journals, and The Coalescence of White Dwarfs and Type I Supernovae (1989) appeared as a journal paper and again in a proceedings volume. Both are citable, so both are listed.

How are the research areas assigned?
